Ethereum proposes quantum-resistant staking upgrade

Ethereum (ETH)

Cryptobriefing.com reports that Ethereum researchers have filed a draft proposal for a post-quantum-ready validator deposit contract. Authored by Kevaundray Wedderburn and Thomas Coratger, the framework allows validators to gradually adopt quantum-resistant cryptography without disrupting existing infrastructure. This initiative aims to protect the roughly 37 million ETH currently staked against potential future threats from quantum computers. The proposal supports variable-length public keys and includes an irreversible BLS retirement switch to phase out vulnerable signatures. It is part of the Ethereum Foundation’s “I* milestone” roadmap, targeting a full migration to leanXMSS-based signatures by around 2029. The flexible design ensures algorithm-agnostic compatibility, allowing the community to evaluate competing schemes as they mature. This effort complements EIP-8141, which addresses account abstraction for quantum-safe signatures on the execution layer.

The 1-hour buy ratio of 59.2% indicates strong immediate buying pressure, contrasting sharply with the 24-hour ratio of 45.7% which suggests fading interest over the longer term. A positive volume delta of +$9,416,780 in the last hour shows active accumulation, whereas the 24-hour delta of -$71,475,879 reveals significant net selling over the full day. The 4-hour buy ratio of 50.4% sits near parity, reflecting a neutral sentiment that has shifted from bearish to bullish in the short term. While the 24-hour CVD remains negative at -$25,101,468, the recent surge in volume delta and buy ratio suggests a potential short-term reversal or accumulation phase. The data implies that while the daily trend is bearish, immediate momentum is currently favoring buyers.
