Algorand Founder Silvio Micali's Cryptographic Legacy Powers Network

Algorand (ALGO) Editor: Eugene Serbin

bsc.news reports that Algorand founder Silvio Micali, an MIT professor and Turing Award winner, co-invented the zero-knowledge proofs and verifiable random functions that underpin the network. Micali and Shafi Goldwasser received the 2012 Turing Award for transformative contributions to the complexity-theoretic foundations of cryptography. Zero-knowledge proofs allow one party to prove a statement is true without revealing underlying data, a cornerstone of privacy-preserving technology.

Micali also co-invented verifiable random functions, which produce a random number plus a verifiable proof that cannot be faked. He founded Algorand in 2017, building the network around these specific cryptographic tools. Algorand uses Pure Proof-of-Stake, where users maintain control of their $ALGO in their wallets while securing the network.

The VRF selects block proposers and committee members privately, making it hard for adversaries to target leaders in advance. This mechanism ensures only one block is proposed at a time, preventing forks and achieving immediate transaction finality.
