Cosmos Hub Validators Intercept 1.23M Stolen ATOM
According to cvj.ai, Cosmos Hub validators secured 1,227,121.37 ATOM stolen during a Neutron governance exploit on September 22. The attacker moved roughly 1.73 million ATOM to the Hub before validators halted the chain at height 33,086,740. A patched version of Gaia software, v28.3.0, executed a one-time state change to transfer the funds to a recovery multisig.
Six validators, including Nansen and Keplr, now hold the assets as signers. Cosmos Labs confirmed the patch did not affect other user balances or delegations. The emergency action separated the interception of funds from the decision on who receives them.
A separate governance proposal must pass to authorize the release of these specific assets. The Hub itself was not exploited but served as the interception point for the stolen balance. Validators representing over 67% of voting power confirmed the update before the restart. The recovery plan requires a public mandate before the multisig signers can distribute the funds.
