PancakeSwap AMM Upgrade Compatibility Review Published

PancakeSwap (CAKE) Editor: Eugene Serbin

dev.to published a technical audit on 2 October 2026 regarding the upgradeability and compatibility of PancakeSwap's Automated Market Maker contracts. The report, prepared by a Senior DeFi Security Researcher, examined the protocol's deployment on Ethereum and L2 roll-ups including Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync, where the Total Value Locked stands at approximately $1.906 billion. The audit focused on the new upgradeability stack utilizing Transparent/Universal Upgradeable Proxy and OpenZeppelin v5 libraries alongside a cross-chain governance framework.

While the framework is functionally sound, the researcher identified multiple compatibility and governance weaknesses that could be exploited during a faulty or malicious upgrade. These issues include inconsistent proxy patterns, insufficient storage-layout safeguards, and governance centralisation. The aggregate risk score for upgrade-compatibility was rated at 7 out of 10, classified as High-Medium.

The report notes that a single buggy upgrade could jeopardise the entire TVL due to the protocol's mature status and high value. To mitigate these risks, the researcher recommends standardising on UUPS, hardening the upgrade execution path, and introducing explicit storage versioning. Implementing these measures could lower the upgrade risk to the low-medium range of 4/10 or less. The audit concludes that these changes will safeguard the protocol against upgrade-related exploits and preserve user confidence.

CAKE is currently trading at $2.57 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 66.4%, indicating strong immediate buying pressure compared to the 55.6% ratio over the last 4 hours. This short-term surge is supported by a positive Volume Delta of +$19,989 in the last hour, suggesting active accumulation. Over the past 24 hours, the buy ratio has settled to 54.8% with a cumulative Volume Delta of +$359,457, showing sustained but less intense buying than the immediate hour. The Cumulative Volume Delta for the 24-hour period closed at -$43,687, indicating that while volume was high, sell pressure offset some buying in the broader timeframe. Spot volume reached $3,755,281 over the day across 57,160 trades. The flow shows a clear spike in buying intensity over the last hour relative to the broader daily trend.

The latest daily buy ratio of 54.3% sits at the 87th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 50.6% - stronger buying than most days.

The current 1-hour buy ratio of 66.4% is notably higher than the 7-day average of 51.0%, representing a 3.8 point increase in buying preference. However, the 24-hour spot volume of $3,755,281 is only 0.41 times the weekly average, indicating significantly lower trading activity than usual. The coin experienced a price change of -6.5% over the preceding 8 days, with a total Volume Delta of +$946,038 recorded for that period. Net buying occurred on 4 of the last 7 days, contrasting with the 14 hours of net buying recorded in the last 24 hours. This suggests that while today shows unusual buying intensity, the overall volume and price trend remain subdued compared to the weekly norm.
