Ethereum Schedules RLUSD Gas Payments for 2027 Hegotá Upgrade
bsc.news reports that Ethereum core developers have formally scheduled EIP-8141 Frame Transactions for the 2027 Hegotá upgrade. This proposal allows stablecoins like Ripple's $RLUSD, $USDC, and $USDT to be used for gas payments, removing the need to hold $ETH for transactions. Developers advanced the proposal from "Considered for Inclusion" to "Scheduled for Inclusion" during the Aug. 27 All Core Developers Execution call.
The update divides transactions into programmable frames covering authorization, fee payment, and execution. This structure enables applications to pay fees on behalf of users or accept stablecoins while validators still receive network fees in $ETH. Regulated stablecoins such as $RLUSD, issued by Standard Custody and Trust Company, are positioned as enterprise-ready options.
The feature will be natively integrated into the base protocol rather than relying on the existing ERC-4337 workaround. Hegotá will follow the Glamsterdam upgrade and is planned for 2027. Developers were still narrowing the scope of the upgrade as recently as August. This change aims to eliminate the friction of maintaining an $ETH balance for asset movement.
