Bitget resumes BTC withdrawals as hacker swaps ETH on THORChain

THORChain (RUNE) Editor: Eugene Serbin

Cointelegraph.com reports that Bitget is resuming Bitcoin withdrawals on Monday following a security breach that compromised nearly $388 million in assets. The exchange initially suspended withdrawals after the Sept. 24 incident, which affected its hot and warm wallet infrastructure while cold wallets remained secure. Bitget revised the stolen amount from $351.6 million to $387.5 million after accounting for additional transfers on Zcash and Tron.

CEO Gracy Chen stated that BTC withdrawals on the Bitcoin network and BNB Smart Chain were restored first because the pipeline was the first to be completed. Ether withdrawals are scheduled to return on Tuesday across Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism. USDT withdrawals will resume on Wednesday across Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, and Tron.

Other assets and peer-to-peer services are set to return on Friday, with no priority access for institutions or VIP customers. The attacker has been moving stolen crypto through THORChain, swapping Ether for Bitcoin. Bitget CEO Gracy Chen called on THORChain to refuse services to addresses linked to the attack. THORChain described its network halt as an emergency security mechanism affecting the protocol broadly rather than a selective freeze of specific funds.
