THORChain halts chains over solvency, rejects selective censorship

THORChain (RUNE) Editor: Eugene Serbin

cryptocurrency.com.tr reports that THORChain has refused to implement selective censorship mechanisms, ensuring it cannot block individual transactions based on user identity or history. The protocol distinguishes between pausing a chain for solvency reasons and censoring specific operations on subjective grounds. Chad Barraford clarified that changes to the protocol require consensus from node operators, eliminating any possibility of unilateral control by the founders.

This stance addresses a sensitive industry debate regarding the blocking of transactions regardless of the origin of the funds. A recent example involved the Litecoin pause, where a node operator detected unusual activity and a price discrepancy. This prompted the suspension of operations for approximately one hour.

After verifying that no insolvency issue existed, another node resumed activity. The decision responded to an objective technical condition rather than the identity of the users involved. THORChain maintains that it does not allow blocking individual transactions, even if the funds come from specific origins.
