LayerZero and Coinbase advance quantum readiness ahead of 2029 deadline

LayerZero (ZRO) Editor: Eugene Serbin

bitcoinethereumnews.com reports that LayerZero and Coinbase are accelerating efforts to protect blockchains from future quantum computers. LayerZero has released Akita, a production-ready tool based on lattice-based cryptography designed to secure zero-knowledge proving systems. This new system reduces proof sizes to between 65 and 80 kilobytes and speeds up proving by two to three times compared to its Jolt system.

Coinbase is convening Bitcoin developers and cryptographers at Stanford to discuss migration strategies for elliptic-curve cryptography. The urgency stems from a March 2026 whitepaper by Google Quantum AI researchers Ryan Babbush and Hartmut Neven, which suggested breaking 256-bit cryptography could require fewer than 1,200 logical qubits. Google aims to complete its own migration to post-quantum cryptography by 2029, collaborating with Coinbase, the Stanford Institute for Blockchain Research, and the Ethereum Foundation.

Coinbase hosted a workshop at Stanford with cryptographer Dan Boneh to compare signature schemes, noting that a solid plan is more important than pinpointing an exact attack year. Ethereum’s “Lean Ethereum” roadmap also targets 2029 for full post-quantum protection, addressing vulnerabilities in consensus-layer BLS signatures and account-level ECDSA signatures. NIST anticipates deprecating ECDSA by 2030 and disallowing it by 2035.

ZRO is trading at $1.08 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 45.6%, indicating immediate selling pressure in the short term. However, the 4-hour buy ratio stands at 57.9%, suggesting that buying interest is building over a slightly longer timeframe compared to the 24-hour average of 48.4%. The 1-hour volume delta is negative at -$14,536, showing net outflows in the last hour, while the 4-hour delta is positive at +$140,218, reflecting net inflows over the past four hours. Volume delta measures the difference between buy and sell volume, so a positive figure means buyers are absorbing more supply than sellers are providing. The 24-hour volume delta is -$192,292, indicating that over the full day, sellers have dominated the flow.

The latest daily buy ratio of 49.7% sits at the 64th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 48.5% - ordinary for this coin.

Over the preceding week, the 7-day average buy ratio was 49.6%, making today’s 24-hour ratio of 48.4% slightly below the weekly norm by 1.2 points. Spot volume for the day was $6,028,813, which is 1.06 times the weekly average, indicating slightly higher than usual activity. The 8-day volume delta total was -$935,300, showing that net selling has been the dominant trend over the longer period. With only 2 of 7 days showing net buying, the current price change of +6.7% over 8 days has occurred despite a general bias toward outflows. This suggests that while volume is elevated, the coin has seen more days of net selling than buying recently.
