LayerZero proposes Otter AMM to neutralize MEV via batch auctions

LayerZero (ZRO) Editor: Eugene Serbin

Cryptobriefing.com reports that LayerZero has introduced Otter, an automated market maker mechanism designed to eliminate front-running and sandwich attacks. The system utilizes batch auctions to remove the sequencing advantage that block builders typically exploit to extract miner extractable value (MEV). By clearing trades simultaneously rather than one by one, the order of transactions no longer influences the clearing price.

The design is based on the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism, where payments depend on a bid's impact on the group rather than its position in a queue. This structure makes truthful reporting of valuation the dominant strategy for both traders and builders. Surplus value that would normally go to extractors is redirected locally to liquidity providers, subsidizing fees and rewarding pool participants.

The mechanism relies on the consensus layer being censorship-resistant, as builders could otherwise exclude unfavorable bids. This proposal follows the earlier release of ATLAS, an exchange engine focused on efficiency. The paper is currently pending peer review and lacks a specific deployment timeline or token launch details. Implementing this theoretically optimal model presents engineering challenges due to the computational costs and gas limits of blockchain execution.

ZRO is trading at $1.03 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 56.8%, indicating a short-term shift toward buying pressure compared to the 45.8% ratio seen over the past 4 hours. This recent uptick in buying interest contrasts with the broader 24-hour trend, where the buy ratio sits at 48.9%, suggesting the immediate surge is fading against the daily average. The 1-hour volume delta is positive at $6,115, showing net inflows in the last hour, whereas the 4-hour and 24-hour deltas are negative at -$57,214 and -$161,899 respectively. A positive volume delta means buyers are executing more aggressively than sellers, while a negative delta indicates sellers are dominating the flow. Despite the recent hour showing net buying, the cumulative 24-hour closed cumulative volume delta remains negative at -$152,594. This confirms that while short-term momentum has turned slightly bullish, the overall daily flow remains dominated by sellers.

The latest daily buy ratio of 49.7% sits at the 64th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 48.5% - ordinary for this coin.

Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio for ZRO was 48.9%, matching the current 24-hour ratio exactly. This indicates that today's trading activity is statistically ordinary relative to the weekly norm, with no deviation in the proportion of buying versus selling pressure. However, the volume activity is subdued, with today's spot volume of $6,945,432 representing only 0.62 times the weekly average. This lower volume suggests reduced participation compared to the standard trading days observed over the last seven days. The coin has declined 14.3% over the eight-day period, with a total volume delta of -$545,865, reflecting consistent selling pressure throughout the week. Only three of the seven days experienced net buying, further highlighting the bearish bias in the recent weekly context.
