Aave Proposes Rate Hike for GHO Stablecoin Borrowing

Aave (AAVE) Editor: Eugene Serbin

TechGaged.com reports that Aave governance is considering a proposal to raise borrowing costs for its native stablecoin, GHO. The October 2 submission suggests increasing the base rate on Aave V3 Ethereum Core from 4.25% to 4.50% APR. Simultaneously, the Ethereum Prime deployment would see its rate rise from 2.75% to 3.00%.

This 25 basis point adjustment aims to balance borrowing demand with secondary-market liquidity and savings incentives. Higher rates generally discourage new debt creation and encourage borrowers to close existing positions. Such a move helps tighten circulating supply, reinforcing the stablecoin’s peg or replenishing system liquidity.

The Core proposal aligns the borrowing rate with the Aave Savings Rate, while Prime retains a discount at optimal utilization. This adjustment ties directly into liquidity within GHO Stability Modules, which handle conversions involving reserve assets like USDC and USDT. The move occurs as Aave expands beyond its original lending design, with discussions ongoing regarding Aave V4 and institutional markets.

A protocol-controlled stablecoin provides Aave with a unit of liquidity it can integrate across markets without relying solely on external issuers. Active management of these monetary parameters is crucial to prevent supply from outpacing demand or becoming too expensive for users.
