Cardano gains native x402 payments support from Coinbase protocol
u.today reports that Cardano has secured native support within the official x402 codebase, a move driven by engineers from the Cardano Foundation. This integration embeds Cardano directly into the reference tooling of the open payment protocol originally developed by Coinbase. Developers can now utilize standardized client, server, and facilitator components for Cardano mainnet, preprod, and preview networks.
The x402 protocol leverages HTTP's 402 Payment Required status code to enable direct payments over the internet. This structure allows applications to request specific fees for access to services, data, or computing resources. Such a mechanism is particularly useful for autonomous AI agents that need to settle payments for APIs or digital services.
While third-party projects like Masumi previously enabled these payments, this new implementation is now part of the official code. This development lowers the barrier for developers using Cardano as a settlement network. It also simplifies the inclusion of Cardano in multi-chain applications alongside other supported networks. The x402 Foundation launched in July with backing from major entities including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe, and Visa.
How the market reacted
Whalio's own Binance spot order flow for ADA, measured when this story was written up on 15 September 2026. Not the outlet's figures.
Cardano is trading at $0.2086 with a 24-hour spot volume of $30,261,031 and 177,649 trades. The 24-hour buy ratio sits at 49.7%, indicating a near-even split between buyers and sellers. Short-term pressure shows a 1-hour buy ratio of 47.5% and a 4-hour ratio of 49.8%, suggesting buying interest is stabilizing after a brief dip. The volume delta is negative across all timeframes, with -$50,295 in the last hour and -$159,220 over 24 hours. A negative volume delta means that sell volume has exceeded buy volume during these periods. The cumulative volume delta closed at -$675,875, confirming that net selling pressure has dominated the day. Net buying occurred for only 11 of the 24 hours, highlighting a lack of sustained aggressive buying.
The latest daily buy ratio of 45.6% sits at the 5th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.2% - among the weakest buying days it has had.
Was that an ordinary day?
The same Binance spot measurements for ADA, averaged over the days leading up to the story.
Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio was 48.8%, making today's 49.7% slightly higher by 0.9 points. Volume was measured at 0.92x the average, indicating lighter trading activity than usual. The coin experienced a 5.4% price drop over eight days, with a total volume delta of -$6,112,113. Only two days out of seven saw net buying, suggesting a generally bearish trend. Today's volume relative to the average of 0.92x confirms this is a quieter day for the asset. The current 24-hour volume delta of -$159,220 is a fraction of the weekly total, showing that selling pressure has been consistent rather than spiking today.
