Bitcoin Holds $78k as Institutions Eye $82k Resistance

Bitcoin (BTC) Editor: Eugene Serbin

exchangerates.org.uk reports that Bitcoin reclaimed the $79,000 level on Wednesday, recovering from two daily declines to retain most of its August gains. The asset traded at $79,216, up 1.02%, as investors balanced renewed institutional demand against upcoming US inflation data. Analysts identify a critical resistance zone between $81,300 and $82,100, with Bitfinex noting little historical activity above this boundary.

A break above $82,100 could trigger a rapid advance toward $86,500, according to Bitfinex, which sees $77,100 as the level that would invalidate the medium-term uptrend. Standard Chartered’s Geoff Kendrick maintained his $100,000 year-end forecast but suggested Bitcoin could reach its previous record near $126,000. Kendrick attributed this optimism to recovering spot ETF inflows and room for investors to rebuild positions after short liquidations.

Bernstein projects Bitcoin could reach $125,000 by the end of 2026 and $150,000 by mid-2027, citing government debt pressures and wider institutional access. Farside Investors recorded $730.8 million in ETF inflows on September 3, followed by $174.6 million on September 4, though Tuesday saw $46.6 million in net withdrawals. Options traders have increased protection around the September 16 Federal Reserve decision, indicating preparation for volatility rather than an assumption of uninterrupted growth.

Whalio’s Binance spot data shows Bitcoin trading at $78,455.80, with a 1-hour buy ratio of 42.2% and a 4-hour ratio of 43.8%, both trailing the 24-hour ratio of 44.4%. This divergence suggests that buying pressure is fading in the immediate short term compared to the daily average. The 1-hour volume delta is negative at -$21,225,500, indicating that sellers have been more aggressive than buyers in the last hour. Over the full 24-hour period, the volume delta stands at -$168,399,753, confirming that net selling pressure has dominated the day's activity. The Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD) closed at -$55,198,981, further illustrating that the market has been net short despite the price holding above $78,000. Only 10 out of 24 hours saw net buying, highlighting a lack of sustained bullish conviction during this session.

The latest daily buy ratio of 46.7% sits at the 18th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.2% - weaker buying than most days.

Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio was 49.7%, making today’s 24-hour ratio of 44.4% a 5.3 percentage point decline from the weekly norm. This indicates that the current day is less bullish than the typical trading day observed over the last seven days. Volume has been elevated at 1.41 times the weekly average, suggesting increased participation despite the lower buy ratio. The 8-day volume delta total is -$140,817,713, showing that net selling has persisted across the week. While the price has changed only +1.3% over eight days, the negative delta highlights that much of the volume has been driven by sellers rather than buyers.
