Bitcoin stalls near $80k as Strategy's premium vanishes

Bitcoin (BTC) Editor: Eugene Serbin

news.bitcoin.com reports that Bitcoin has stalled around $80,000, a pause that BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes believes is breaking Strategy’s long-standing playbook. Hayes argues that Michael Saylor’s company is now boxed into three uncomfortable choices, none of which are free, because the stock’s market value to net asset value has compressed to roughly 1.01x. As of August 27, Strategy’s basic and diluted measures sat near 0.73x and 0.74x, leaving almost no premium to fund another buying cycle for its 840,447 BTC holdings. The BitMEX co-founder noted on Laura Shin’s Unchained Podcast that Bitcoin does not need to fall for the model to break; it simply needs to stop accelerating.

This sideways grind punishes the structure that previously allowed the company to sell new shares and buy more bitcoin. Data from May showed Strategy held 818,334 BTC at an average cost of $75,537 against roughly $1.5 billion in annual obligations for STRK and STRC instruments. At that pace, the company had only about 18 months of dividend coverage before needing a new funding source.

Hayes has mocked Saylor’s comment that the company would “probably sell some bitcoin to pay a dividend just to inoculate the market,” accusing him of playing “Jedi mind tricks” with investors. He suggests that investors seeking plain bitcoin exposure can now simply buy a spot exchange-traded fund without paying for Strategy’s leverage or dividend overhang.

Whalio’s Binance spot data shows Bitcoin trading at $80,249.58 with a 24-hour buy ratio of 45.2%, indicating that selling pressure has slightly outpaced buying over the full day. In the most recent hour, the buy ratio dropped sharply to 23.7%, while the four-hour ratio sat at 39.8%, suggesting that immediate buying momentum is fading compared to the broader daily trend. The volume delta reflects this imbalance, with a net outflow of $42,682,940 in the last hour and a cumulative 24-hour delta of -$123,102,218. This negative volume delta means that sellers have been more aggressive than buyers, driving the cumulative volume delta down to -$109,593,238 by the close. Net buying occurred for only 8 of the 24 hours, confirming a day dominated by distribution rather than accumulation.

The latest daily buy ratio of 46.7% sits at the 18th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.2% - weaker buying than most days.

Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio was 51.1%, making today’s 24-hour ratio of 45.2% a notable decline of 5.8 percentage points. Trading volume has also slowed, sitting at just 0.65 times the weekly average, which indicates a significant drop in market participation compared to the previous seven days. While the price rose 9.9% over the eight-day period, the current session’s reduced volume and lower buy ratio suggest the recent uptrend is losing steam. This is an unusual day for the coin, characterized by weaker volume and a shift toward net selling compared to the generally positive flow seen in the prior week.
