Compound launches institutional-only lending market with $52M overhaul

Compound (COMP) Editor: Eugene Serbin

Cryptobriefing.com reports that Compound Foundation has launched a permissioned lending market exclusively for institutional borrowers. This move splits the protocol's liquidity into two distinct layers, granting whitelisted participants their own collateral sets and risk parameters. The launch coincides with a $52 million development program, the largest in the protocol's history, which approved $14 million upfront.

The remaining funds are gated behind milestones aimed at onboarding regulated entities like banks and asset managers. Aaron Schnarch, formerly CEO of Coinbase Custody, now serves as Executive Director, leading a team including COO Christopher Donovan and CTO Leo Eikelman. The foundation claims to have over 10 confirmed partners and discussions with 20 additional collaborators.

New compliance tooling, including KYC and AML infrastructure, is being built to support tokenized assets like treasuries. Compound currently holds $1.2 billion in total value locked, down from a 2021 peak of $12 billion. Since its 2018 launch, the protocol has processed approximately $480 billion in volume with zero bad debt.

Whalio data shows COMP trading at $21.13 with strong short-term buying pressure. The buy ratio stands at 65.2% over the last hour and 66.1% over four hours, indicating aggressive accumulation. This contrasts with the 24-hour buy ratio of 47.4%, suggesting that buying intensity is building in recent hours. Volume delta is positive at +$27,817 for the hour and +$107,077 for four hours, while the 24-hour delta is negative at -$35,378. This divergence implies that recent trades are heavily skewed toward buyers, offsetting earlier selling pressure. Cumulative volume delta closed at +$102,036 over the last 24 hours, with net buying occurring in 13 of the past 24 hours.

The latest daily buy ratio of 49.4% sits at the 35th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 51.1% - ordinary for this coin.

Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio was 46.1%, making the current 24-hour reading of 47.4% slightly above average by 1.3 points. However, spot volume for the day was only 0.80 times the weekly average, indicating lower-than-usual participation. While the price rose 10.1% over eight days, the total volume delta for that period was negative -$434,589. Net buying occurred on only one of the seven days, suggesting this recent buying spike is an unusual deviation from the week's trend. The current activity represents a sharp reversal from the predominantly neutral-to-sell flow observed over the past week.
