Hedera Deprecates Smart Contract Calls in Atomic Batches by March 2027

Hedera (HBAR) Editor: Eugene Serbin

TechGaged.com reports that Hedera has initiated a six-month deprecation process to remove smart contract calls from Atomic Batch Transactions, with a final deadline of March 2027. The change targets the ability to place EVM smart contract calls inside the batch structure, while native Hedera service operations can still be composed into all-or-nothing batches. During the transition period, a batch may include no more than one smart contract call, which must appear as the final inner transaction.

Any batch containing multiple contract calls or placing a contract call earlier in the sequence will be rejected. From March 2027, smart contract calls will no longer be accepted as inner transactions at all. Hedera attributes this change to architectural differences, noting that the Atomic Batch Transaction model has no direct equivalent inside the EVM.

This discrepancy can cause embedded contract calls to behave differently than logic executed entirely within a single EVM transaction. For applications requiring strict atomic execution involving contract logic, Hedera recommends moving the sequence into a smart contract and invoking it directly. Applications that do not need strict all-or-nothing behavior can instead submit transactions sequentially. This technical shift aims to reduce the number of execution models developers must reason about, making ordering and revert behavior more predictable.

HBAR is currently trading at $0.1020 on Binance spot markets. The 1-hour buy ratio stands at 39.6%, while the 4-hour ratio is 49.7%, both sitting below the 24-hour buy ratio of 51.4%. This indicates that short-term buying pressure is fading compared to the broader daily trend. The 1-hour volume delta is negative at -$63,056, and the 4-hour delta is -$7,167, showing recent selling pressure. However, the 24-hour volume delta remains positive at +$222,532, with a CVD of +$22,450 at the close. This suggests that over the full day, net buying has outweighed selling, despite the recent dip in the last few hours.

The latest daily buy ratio of 49.3% sits at the 50th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.2% - ordinary for this coin.

Over the preceding week, HBAR experienced a price increase of 9.1% over eight days. The 7-day average buy ratio was 49.6%, meaning the current 24-hour ratio of 51.4% is slightly above average by 1.8 points. However, the current spot volume is only 0.14x the weekly average, indicating significantly lower trading activity than usual. This makes today an unusually quiet day for the coin, despite the positive price action. The weekly volume delta was -$6,733,372, contrasting with the positive daily delta, highlighting a divergence in recent flow dynamics.
