TRON explains USDT transfer costs and energy mechanics

TRON (TRX) Editor: Eugene Serbin

A dev.to post from 4 October 2026 clarifies why USDT transfers on TRON vary in cost from nearly zero to several TRX. The network charges for transactions using two resources rather than traditional gas. Senders with energy from staking or renting TRX pay minimal fees, while those without must burn TRX to cover the cost.

Writing to an existing storage slot is cheaper than creating a new one, meaning the recipient's address status directly impacts the fee. The author worked on fee logic for Taccoin Wallet's send-by-link feature, where the sender pays upfront fees. This ensures the receiver gets the full amount without needing to acquire TRX first.

On BNB Smart Chain, the equivalent requires a small BNB gas reserve. The general lesson is that determining who pays energy and if the recipient is new should be a primary design consideration. Numbers are approximate and should be estimated at send time rather than hard-coded.

TRX trades at $0.3354 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 44.3% and a 4-hour ratio of 49.8%, both below the 24-hour average of 52.4%. The 1-hour volume delta is -$46,169 and the 4-hour delta is -$8,545, indicating immediate selling pressure that contrasts with the positive 24-hour delta of +$963,319. The buy ratio measures the proportion of trades executed by buyers versus sellers, showing a shift toward selling in the short term. Volume delta tracks the net volume of buy versus sell orders, revealing that recent short-term activity has been net negative. Despite the short-term dip, the 24-hour data shows a net inflow of capital over the full day.

The latest daily buy ratio of 49.7% sits at the 33rd percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 52.4% - ordinary for this coin.

Over the preceding week, the 7-day average buy ratio was 48.1%, making the current 24-hour ratio of 52.4% an increase of 4.2 points. This suggests a relatively higher level of buying interest compared to the weekly norm. However, the 24-hour spot volume of $19,976,257 is only 0.78x the weekly average, indicating lower trading activity. The 8-day volume delta totals -$2,573,629, showing a net outflow over the longer period despite the recent daily inflow. This combination of higher buy ratio but lower volume suggests a day of concentrated but less frequent buying activity.
