Tron users lose $9.4M to address poisoning as wallet defenses lag
bitcoinethereumnews.com reports that fifteen victims lost a combined $9.4 million to a single address poisoning operator on the Tron network over the past four weeks. On-chain investigator Specter flagged these losses on August 27, noting that stolen balances were swapped into USDD and funneled to one consolidation wallet. Two of the largest victims each lost $2.5 million in these targeted attacks.
Analyst Stacy Muur explained that the scam begins when attackers send tiny dust transactions from fake addresses that closely resemble real ones. Users often copy these deceptive addresses from their history, sending funds directly to the thief instead of the intended recipient. Blockchain addresses are long strings, so wallets typically display only the first and last few characters, allowing the trick to succeed.
On August 22, investment firm Bofur Capital lost about $2 million when it copied a wrong address after pulling funds from Compound. The attacker swapped the stolen USDC into DAI to avoid having the funds frozen. While MetaMask and Trust Wallet have added protections, these features work mainly on EVM chains and not Tron. Trust Wallet has detected over 225 million poisoning attempts with more than $500 million confirmed stolen.
