SMBC Nikko Partners with Uniswap for Japan DeFi Gateway

Uniswap (UNI) Editor: Eugene Serbin

crypto.news reports that SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind have signed an MoU with Uniswap Labs, Base, and the Nyx Foundation to build a Japan-focused DeFi Gateway. The partners aim to complete this controlled entry point into decentralized finance by mid-2027. Uniswap v4 hooks will enforce AML, counterterrorism financing, and investor protection controls directly at the pool level.

Base will support deployment and x402 integration, while Nethermind leads engineering and smart-contract security. SMBC Nikko will handle regulatory discussions and risk modeling as the group develops liquidity-provisioning protocols. The project expands on research announced in March, which focused on connecting Japanese investors with automated market makers.

Participants will refine strategies for stablecoins and real-world assets without yet disclosing specific tokens or fees. Progress will be shared with Japan’s Financial Services Agency, though no public launch date has been set. The initiative includes exploring agentic vaults using verifiable AI to support investment decisions within predefined parameters. This five-party structure moves the work from initial research into a defined development phase with clear technical roles.

UNI trades at $8.98 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 58.7%, indicating strong immediate buying pressure compared to the 51.7% ratio over the past four hours. The 24-hour buy ratio sits at 56.2%, showing that aggressive accumulation is sustaining momentum over a longer timeframe. A positive volume delta of $439,566 in the last hour signals that buyers are actively absorbing sell-side liquidity. Over 24 hours, the volume delta reaches $7,896,725, confirming sustained institutional or whale interest. The CVD for the 24-hour close is +$1,832,366, meaning net buying has outweighed selling throughout the day. Buying pressure is clearly building in the short term, as the one-hour aggression exceeds the four-hour and daily averages.

The latest daily buy ratio of 45.7% sits at the 13th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.2% - weaker buying than most days.

This represents a 6.6 percentage point increase over the weekly average, highlighting a shift toward net buying.
