Uniswap Burns $596M in UNI After Fee Switch Approval

Uniswap (UNI) Editor: Eugene Serbin

Startupfortune.com reports that Uniswap governance approved the UNIfication proposal with 99.9% support, marking its biggest structural change in seven years. Following the vote, the protocol executed an on-chain burn of 100 million UNI tokens from its treasury, valued at roughly $596 million. This retroactive adjustment estimated fees owed since the token's 2020 launch, with founder Hayden Adams announcing the move after the timelock cleared.

The approval came from a proposal jointly authored by Uniswap Labs, the Uniswap Foundation, Adams, Devin Walsh, and Ken Ng. Going forward, a portion of trading fees from Uniswap v3 and v2 pools will be diverted to buy back and burn UNI. Specifically, one-quarter of fees from 0.01% and 0.05% tiers and one-sixth from 0.30% and 1% tiers are directed to the burn.

Uniswap v2 liquidity provider fees drop from 0.3% to 0.25%, with the remaining 0.05% going to the protocol. Net sequencer fees from Unichain are also swept into this mechanism. The shift marks a transition from a pure governance token to one with a direct claim on protocol revenue. This long-debated fee switch activation links UNI directly to Uniswap's trading activity.

Whalio spot data shows UNI trading at $9.05 with a 24-hour buy ratio of 53.3%, indicating that buying pressure is currently dominant over selling. Shorter timeframes show slightly lower conviction, with the 1-hour buy ratio at 42.1% and the 4-hour ratio at 49.5%, suggesting intraday volatility despite the daily trend. The 24-hour volume delta is positive at $3,470,407, meaning net buying has outweighed net selling over the last day. However, the 1-hour volume delta is negative at -$234,561, showing that recent flow has turned slightly bearish compared to the broader daily trend. The cumulative volume delta (CVD) closed at -$967,190, indicating that despite the positive volume delta, the total volume of sell orders has historically exceeded buy orders in the closing period. This data reflects a market that is net buying over the day but experiencing some immediate selling pressure in the short term.

The latest daily buy ratio of 45.7% sits at the 13th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.2% - weaker buying than most days.

Over the preceding week, UNI experienced a 6.7% price decline and saw volume at just 0.72x its average, indicating a quieter and weaker trading period. The 7-day average buy ratio was 49.9%, which is lower than today's 24-hour reading of 53.3%, suggesting that buying pressure has intensified relative to the weekly norm. Today's volume delta of $3,470,407 contrasts with the week's total negative delta of -$220,848, marking this as an unusual day of net accumulation compared to the prior trend. While the week saw net buying on only 3 of 7 days, today contributes to a stronger immediate flow. This shift from a net outflow week to a net inflow day highlights a potential reversal in short-term sentiment.
