Eigen Labs and Shielded Labs Launch HashSmash AI Cryptography Competition
bitcoinworld.media reports that Eigen Labs and Zcash organization Shielded Labs have launched HashSmash, an open competition to test AI attacks on cryptographic hash functions. The event runs on Eigen Labs’ Yukon platform and targets SHA-256, SHA-3, BLAKE3, and Poseidon. Participants can direct AI agents to find vulnerabilities in these widely used digital fingerprints.
Every result is published and reviewed by cryptographers to determine how far AI can advance codebreaking. The launch coincides with Epoch, a project to future-proof Zcash against quantum computing and AI threats. Zooko Wilcox of Shielded Labs stated that AI models offer an opportunity to strengthen cryptographic foundations.
Soubhik Deb from Eigen Labs described the initiative as an open multiplayer competition to battle-test cryptography. Submissions are first reviewed by an AI verifier before expert cryptographers take the next pass. Yukon has previously produced measurable results, such as ECDSA.fail beating a Google Quantum AI benchmark by over 60%. The competition is currently open for participation at Yukon.org.
How the market reacted
Whalio's own Binance spot order flow for ZEC, measured when this story was written up on 5 October 2026. Not the outlet's figures.
Zcash (ZEC) is trading at $1,352.37 with a 24-hour buy ratio of 55.1%, indicating that buyers are currently in control. However, the 1-hour buy ratio sits at 50.1% and the 4-hour ratio is lower at 49.7%, suggesting that short-term buying pressure is fading relative to the daily average. The 24-hour volume delta is positive at +$9,866,928, showing net accumulation over the day, but the 4-hour delta is negative at -$101,185, indicating recent selling. The cumulative volume delta (CVD) for the 24-hour close is -$15,445,206, which means that despite the positive delta, the total volume of sell orders has historically exceeded buy orders in the closing metric. Spot volume for the day reached $96,517,832 across 290,955 trades. Only 10 of the last 24 hours saw net buying, highlighting intermittent rather than sustained demand.
The latest daily buy ratio of 52.9% sits at the 82nd percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 50.2% - stronger buying than most days.
Was that an ordinary day?
The same Binance spot measurements for ZEC, averaged over the days leading up to the story.
Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio was 47.9%, making today’s 55.1% ratio an unusual spike of +7.2 points above the norm. Trading activity was subdued, with 24-hour volume at 0.39x the weekly average, indicating significantly lower participation than usual. The coin has dropped 14.8% over the last eight days, with a total volume delta of -$65,564,585 for the period. Only one of the seven days recorded net buying, underscoring a generally bearish trend. This single day of elevated buying ratios stands out against a week of consistent outflows and price decline.
