Solana reduces slot time to 250ms in SIMD-0525 upgrade

Solana (SOL) Editor: Eugene Serbin

Cvj.ai reports that Solana has lowered its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, completing the third stage of a phased rollout. This adjustment, implemented via the SIMD-0525 upgrade at epoch 1037, increases block production to roughly four slots per second, up from 3.3. Although blocks now arrive nearly 17% faster, sustained transaction capacity remains unchanged because per-slot computation and data limits were reduced proportionally.

Validator leader windows have tightened from 1.2 seconds to one second, as each validator controls four consecutive shorter slots. The network’s epoch length has compressed from approximately 36 hours to 30 hours due to the fixed count of 432,000 slots per epoch. Latency-sensitive DeFi applications benefit from fresher data and narrower slippage windows for oracle-fed markets and automated market makers.

However, node infrastructure faces higher volume ingestion, and blockhashes expire sooner, squeezing flows relying on offline signing. A further cut to 200 milliseconds is planned but unscheduled, contingent on acceptable block-skip rates. The upgrade confirms Solana is faster at updating itself rather than bigger at processing transaction volume.

Solana is trading at $101.64 with a 24-hour spot volume of $215,044,777. The 24-hour buy ratio stands at 51.2%, indicating that buying pressure has slightly exceeded selling pressure over the full day. In contrast, the 1-hour buy ratio is lower at 48.6%, suggesting that short-term momentum is currently favoring sellers despite the longer-term trend. The 1-hour volume delta is negative at -$409,364, showing immediate outflow, while the 4-hour delta is positive at +$6,017,530. This divergence indicates that buying activity occurred earlier in the period but has recently faded. The cumulative volume delta for the 24-hour close is +$21,294,046, confirming net inflow over the day.

The latest daily buy ratio of 48.8% sits at the 27th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 50.0% - weaker buying than most days.
