BIS Uses XRPL for Tamper-Proof Economic Data Prototype

XRP (XRP) Editor: Eugene Serbin

bitcoinethereumnews.com reports that the Bank for International Settlements published Working Paper No. 1374 on September 2, 2026, detailing a blockchain system to secure official economic data. The BIS researchers built and tested this proof of concept on the XRP Ledger to address gaps in the SDMX standard, which lacks built-in verification for downloaded files. Each dataset receives a cryptographic fingerprint bundled into a Merkle root, which is then anchored to the XRP Ledger with a timestamp that cannot be altered.

The published file carries a digitally signed credential tied to the publisher’s identity, allowing users to verify authenticity with a single ledger lookup. The prototype achieved a median publication time of 3–5 seconds and a verification time of 1–2 seconds with negligible on-chain costs. Only the fingerprints go on-chain, preserving the confidentiality of the underlying data, and the codebase was released as open source.

This research builds on context where Ripple partner SBI participated in earlier BIS-adjacent infrastructure work like Project Agora. The paper sits alongside other institutional XRPL developments, including a four-second tokenized Treasury settlement by JPMorgan, Ripple, Mastercard, and Ondo. Analyst @InvestWithD highlighted the paper's significance, while CryptoIG_ noted the DevNet caveat, clarifying that this is research rather than an official adoption announcement. XRP traded at $1.37 at publication, posting a 1.42% gain over 24 hours with a volume of $2.46 billion.

Whalio spot data shows XRP trading at $1.35, with a 1-hour buy ratio of 48.2% compared to a 55.0% ratio over the last 4 hours. This indicates that short-term buying pressure is fading relative to the broader 4-hour trend. The 24-hour buy ratio sits at 52.0%, suggesting a slight majority of volume is driven by buyers over the full day. Volume delta turned negative by -$311,724 in the last hour, contrasting with a positive +$3,465,110 over 4 hours and +$6,226,293 over 24 hours. This means that while net buying has accumulated over the day, recent hourly flow has shifted toward net selling. The cumulative volume delta (CVD) closed at +$8,487,341, reflecting that 15 out of 24 hours saw net buying activity.

The latest daily buy ratio of 50.6% sits at the 83rd percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 48.5% - stronger buying than most days.
