Citi Partners With Coinbase on Stablecoins as Ripple Expands RLUSD
Coinpaper.com reports that Citi has expanded its payments partnership with Coinbase, announced on September 28. The bank selected Coinbase’s Virtual Account Wallet to power virtual accounts that automatically convert incoming fiat into stablecoins. Citi institutional clients can now accept stablecoin payments through Coinbase infrastructure.
This move arrives as total stablecoin capitalization reached approximately $311 billion in August. The infrastructure connects corporate bank accounts with blockchain money, allowing companies to receive fiat and convert it without separate systems. Banks increasingly view stablecoins as tools for 24/7 settlement and cross-border transfers.
Meanwhile, Ripple is expanding beyond XRP-based payments into custody and treasury services. Its RLUSD stablecoin is near $2.4 billion in circulation. Ripple now describes itself as a broader institutional financial platform rather than just a payments company.
