x402 enables AI agents to buy data products with USDC

USDC (USDC) Editor: Eugene Serbin

dev.to reported on October 2, 2026, that verified B2B lead packs are now sold via x402, a protocol resurrecting the HTTP 402 status code for machine checkout. This system allows AI agents to purchase data using USDC without needing human-filled billing forms, API keys, or OAuth logins, treating the wallet as the primary identity. The 402 response body functions as a payment offer rather than an error page, while a machine-readable manifest at /.well-known/x402 helps agents discover catalogs and terms beforehand.

A Model Context Protocol server provides tools that read the same catalog as the endpoint, ensuring consistency between the menu and checkout processes. The live implementation, Scout Packs, offers verified leads in JSON format, including company details and source URLs. Pricing tiers include 25 leads for $9, 50 for $15, and 100 for $25.

The author argues that returning 402s is superior to minting API keys for agent-sold data products. This approach eliminates the subscription signup friction that typically blocks automated buyers.

USDC is trading at $1.00 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 40.2% and a 4-hour ratio of 47.7%, both below the 24-hour average of 48.5%. This indicates that buying pressure is currently fading compared to the broader daily trend. Volume deltas show net outflows of -$23.5 million over the last hour and -$25.6 million over four hours. The 24-hour volume delta stands at -$129.9 million, with cumulative volume delta closing at -$154.7 million. These figures suggest that sellers are dominating the flow, as net buying occurred in only 6 of the last 24 hours. The negative volume delta confirms that more capital is leaving the spot market than entering it.

The latest daily buy ratio of 50.2% sits at the 73rd percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 48.4% - stronger buying than most days.
