Base Backs EIP-8130, Ethereum Opens Platåberget Testnet, Builders Debate Wallet Fragmentation, Nethermind Leaves LayerZero for Chainlink

dev.to reports that Base is championing EIP-8130 as a native account abstraction standard for the EVM ecosystem. Developed with Optimism, Coinbase, and WalletConnect, the proposal aims to unify smart-account features like batching, gas sponsorship, and session keys without forcing identical implementations across all chains. Base plans to launch EIP-8130 with the Cobalt upgrade in September, claiming a 63% reduction in gas for USDC transfers and an 83% drop in transaction size compared to ERC-4337.

The Ethereum Foundation also opened the Platåberget testnet for the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, allowing builders to experiment for several months before the mainnet fork. This hard fork introduces enshrined proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists, and a new state gas dimension that changes how transfers are priced. Meanwhile, a debate among builders and Vitalik Buterin questioned whether native AA will solve wallet fragmentation or merely shift it.

Critics noted that EIP-7702 already disrupted integrations by routing interactions through bundles, complicating event tracking and data attribution. Nethermind announced it is moving its cross-chain verifier role from LayerZero to Chainlink following an extensive review. This shift follows a broader trend of firms migrating operations after the April exploit that drained $292 million from Kelp DAO’s rsETH bridge.
