Ethereum exchange holdings fall as price rallies 27 percent

Ethereum (ETH) Editor: Eugene Serbin

Digitaltoday.co.kr reports that Ethereum has rebounded 27 percent while exchange holdings decline. On August 27, Santiment noted that holders are moving large amounts of ETH off exchanges despite the price uptrend. Exchange-held ETH fell about 18 percent to 6.28 million coins from 7.69 million in early June.

Approximately 1.4 million ETH moved to self-custody wallets and staking protocols during this period. This trend is counter to established market logic, where supply usually flows into exchanges for profit-taking during price rises. Outflows continued even after prices began rising in earnest on August 16.

Since August 19 alone, another 275,000 ETH left exchanges. Bitcoin showed the opposite trend, with exchange holdings rising 0.25 percent and staying high. The difference stems from Ethereum investors moving assets to staking protocols to earn returns, with over 35 percent of total supply now staked. Technical resistance remains between $2,497 and $2,585, where long-term moving averages sit.

Whalio data shows Ethereum trading at $2,510.94 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 35.2 percent and a 4-hour buy ratio of 46.7 percent. These shorter-term ratios are lower than the 24-hour buy ratio of 48.6 percent, indicating that buying pressure is fading in the immediate term. The 1-hour volume delta is -$6,413,941 and the 4-hour delta is -$5,080,929, showing that sell volume has exceeded buy volume recently. The 24-hour volume delta is -$22,699,506, confirming that net selling has dominated the day's trading activity. A negative volume delta means that more money flowed out of buys than into buys, pushing the price down against the broader uptrend.

The latest daily buy ratio of 46.8% sits at the 16th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.5% - weaker buying than most days.

Over the preceding week, the average buy ratio was 51.3 percent, compared to the current 24-hour ratio of 48.6 percent. This represents a 2.6 percentage point drop from the weekly average, suggesting a slight cooling in buying intensity. Volume over the last day was 0.74 times the weekly average, indicating lower-than-normal trading activity. While the coin saw a 7.9 percent price increase over eight days, the current session shows reduced participation relative to the recent trend. This is an unusual day for the coin, characterized by lower volume and a shift toward net selling compared to the previous week's positive flow.
