Ethereum Foundation launches zkAPI for anonymous AI payments

Ethereum (ETH) Editor: Eugene Serbin

lookonchain.com reports that the Ethereum Foundation has partnered with the Open Anonymity Project to launch zkAPI on the Ethereum mainnet. This new system uses zero-knowledge proofs to decouple payments from user identities, allowing individuals to deposit assets like ETH and USDC into a vault contract. Users can then authorize AI API usage without revealing their personal details to service providers or payment processors.

The workflow involves devices generating proofs to verify sufficient funds and prevent double-spending, which servers validate to issue temporary API keys. Service providers record usage and generate signed credentials, while the Ethereum network only logs deposits, settlements, and withdrawals. The solution utilizes cryptographic technologies including Groth16, BN254, Poseidon, and Merkle trees to ensure privacy.

Initially targeted at AI inference scenarios where prompts may contain sensitive health or financial data, the mechanism also supports blockchain RPC and media generation. Users retain the ability to withdraw funds directly from the blockchain if a server ceases operation.
