Ethereum proposes flexible staking deposit for quantum-resistant keys
Bitcoinethereumnews.com reports that Ethereum developers have introduced an early proposal to modernize the staking deposit system for future quantum-resistant validator keys. The draft specification, identified as pull request #12235, aims to make the deposit contract flexible enough to accept new credential formats while allowing a one-way switch to stop new deposits using the current BLS12-381 format. Opened on August 24 and remaining an unmerged Draft as of August 26, the proposal uses the placeholder number 9999 in its working file.
The new design adds a scheme identifier and variable-length fields for public key and credential metadata, each capped at 8,192 bytes. Under this system, the execution layer records deposits while the consensus layer validates credentials, treating non-BLS credentials as opaque data. The contract would operate in three forward-only modes: disabled, BLS enabled, and BLS retired.
Once the retired mode is activated, the contract would permanently reject BLS deposits without the ability to revert. This change creates an entry path for future credential formats, though specific rules for signature validation and key replacement must still be designed separately. Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap pairs the hash-based leanXMSS scheme with leanVM to aggregate larger signatures efficiently. The network estimates that approximately 2029 is the target date when quantum computers might threaten current cryptography, making this a preparatory infrastructure step.
How the market reacted
Whalio's own Binance spot order flow for ETH, measured when this story was written up on 27 August 2026. Not the outlet's figures.
Whalio’s Binance spot data for Ethereum shows a price of $2,506.78 with a 24-hour buy ratio of 51.2%, indicating a slight majority of buying pressure over the full day. However, shorter-term metrics reveal a shift in momentum, with the 1-hour buy ratio dropping to 47.9% and the 4-hour ratio holding at 53.0%. The 1-hour volume delta is negative at -$1,720,954, suggesting immediate selling pressure, while the 4-hour delta is positive at +$17,304,201. The cumulative volume delta for the 24-hour period stands at +$14,758,006, with a CVD of +$9,825,309 at the close. This indicates that while net buying has occurred over the day, recent hours have seen a withdrawal of that aggressive buying sentiment. The 24-hour spot volume reached $617,837,179 across 2,687,659 trades, showing active market participation despite the short-term cooling in buy ratios.
The latest daily buy ratio of 46.8% sits at the 16th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.5% - weaker buying than most days.

Was that an ordinary day?
The same Binance spot measurements for ETH, averaged over the days leading up to the story.
Over the preceding week, Ethereum saw a 7-day average buy ratio of 51.4%, with the latest day showing a negligible difference of -0.2 points. The 8-day price change was +11.3%, supported by a total volume delta of +$343,346,378. Trading volume today was 0.48x the weekly average, indicating a significantly quieter day than usual. Net buying occurred on 6 of the 7 days in the prior week, establishing a consistent upward trend. Compared to the weekly average, today’s lower volume suggests a pause in the intensity of the recent buying activity. This represents an ordinary day for the coin in terms of direction, but unusual in its reduced volume relative to the recent weekly average.
