Ethereum Researchers Draft Deposit-Contract Overhaul for Quantum-Resistant Keys
Crowdfundinsider.com reports that Ethereum researchers have proposed a draft to overhaul the deposit contract, aiming to prepare staking for quantum-resistant keys. The plan targets the gateway where operators lock ether to join consensus, where approximately 42.4 million ETH is currently staked. These positions rely on Boneh–Lynn–Shacham keys, which use elliptic-curve math vulnerable to Shor’s algorithm on quantum machines.
The current contract hard-codes specific dimensions that cannot accept new cryptographic schemes without a structural change. The draft, labeled EIP-8394, would replace rigid layouts with variable-length credentials of up to 8,192 bytes. It introduces a scheme tag where zero remains BLS, allowing future standards to be adopted later.
The contract would initially accept BLS deposits before a one-way switch permanently closes new onboarding to the old format. Existing validators would continue operating while only new joiners must use the next format. This infrastructure change precedes the actual cryptographic swap, which requires a separate consensus-layer upgrade. The Ethereum Foundation aims for core protocol pieces around 2029, treating post-quantum work as a priority since early 2026.
How the market reacted
Whalio's own Binance spot order flow for ETH, measured when this story was written up on 28 August 2026. Not the outlet's figures.
Whalio’s Binance spot data for Ethereum shows a price of $2,510.94 with a 1-hour buy ratio of 70.1%, indicating strong immediate buying pressure. This contrasts sharply with the 4-hour buy ratio of 45.6% and the 24-hour ratio of 48.6%, suggesting the recent surge in buying is fading over a longer timeframe. The 1-hour volume delta is positive at $18,395,272, while the 4-hour and 24-hour deltas are negative at -$7,725,692 and -$22,699,506 respectively. This divergence means that while buyers are aggressive in the short term, net selling has dominated the last day. The 24-hour cumulative volume delta closed at -$17,004,310, confirming that sellers outweighed buyers over the full day.
The latest daily buy ratio of 46.8% sits at the 16th percentile of the last 322 days, against a median of 49.5% - weaker buying than most days.

Was that an ordinary day?
The same Binance spot measurements for ETH, averaged over the days leading up to the story.
Over the preceding week, the 7-day average buy ratio was 51.3%, which is slightly higher than the current 24-hour reading of 48.6%. The latest day’s buy ratio is 2.6 points below this weekly average, indicating a slight weakening of buying intent compared to the norm. Volume over the last day was 0.74 times the weekly average, showing that trading activity was subdued relative to the recent trend. Despite lower volume, the price increased by 7.9% over the eight-day period, with a total volume delta of +$248,748,632. This suggests that while daily activity has cooled, the weekly trend remains firmly bullish compared to the immediate 24-hour snapshot.
